For an industry outsider looking in, an awful lot of metrology technicians and metrologists have their background in the military. There’s a reason for that: Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratories (PMEL) schools all over the world churned out multiple generations of skilled technicians during the last century. Lowry Air Force Base, in Denver, Colorado, was a particularly active training ground for active United States Air Force members, as well as other branches of the military.
