OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 02/09/2011 – From ship engines to gears for construction equipment to giant wind turbines – the MMZ coordinate measuring machine from Carl Zeiss is ideal for large parts with particularly narrow tolerances. The MMZ T, which does not require an additional foundation, is now available with a new key feature. It can now support parts weighing up to 10 tons and thus 50 percent more than before.
“Energy efficiency will become increasingly important in the future; the challenges on quality inspection will rise enormously,” says Jürgen Dussling, Product Manager at Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology. Coordinate measuring machines must be designed to accommodate increasingly larger and heavier parts, while also being increasingly innovative. “For this reason, we have equipped the MMZ T with an expanded measuring range and considerably increased its load capacity,” adds Dussling.
Faster and more accurate
Users benefit from the more accurate measuring results. The more precisely functional parts such as gear wheels and turbine blades are manufactured, the lower the risk of a failure or excessive wear and tear. Signs of wear are a major topic, particularly with wind turbines because it is extremely time consuming and expensive to replace rotor blades and gears at such heights. With its enhanced length measuring error, the MMZ T from Carl Zeiss provides users with up to 15 percent more accuracy and a larger measuring range. The expansion of the range of application in this class of accuracy enables the measurement of even larger parts than before.
The new MMZ T is rounded off by higher speed: travel speed has increased by around 50 percent in all axes. On a gear casing being measured with a 500 millimeter long stylus, this reduces the measuring time by about 10 percent. This saves valuable time: production receives feedback more quickly and the throughput of large parts is higher.
